The A5000T system is a compact
instrument expressly dedicated to measuring the soil thermal
conductivity, i.e. the property which governs the flow of heat
through the soil. This type of inspection is usually performed prior
to the laying of underground conduit pipes, or before building
geothermal wells used for the thermal conditioning of buildings.
Thermal conductivity data can be obtained directly on-site through
the instrument probe (120 cm long), or – when deeper inspections are
requested – samples of compacted soil can be measured at the
laboratory (the probe extension is removable).
The collected data can be directly processed on-site at the end of
the acquisition phase, this latter being automatically controlled by
the instrumentation. Data are both graphically and numerically
expressed in watt/Metric Kelvin (watt = unit of power, meter = unit
of distance, Kelvin = unit of temperature).
To perform this type of inspection it is necessary to drill a hole
in the soil with a 20 mm dia. tool (drill not supplied). The probe
has then to be inserted into the borehole and the probe tip driven
slightly for about 20 cm so to get the best contact with the soil.
The data acquisition procedure, which is automatically controlled by
the instrument itself and which takes up a couple of minutes to be
performed, can be triggered with just the push of one button. The
graphical/numerical value obtained is then stored into an SD memory
card to be processed later on.
Thermal conductivity of different
kind of soil:
. dry rock: +/- 1.5 W/m K . gravel, sand (wet): 1.8 - 2.4 W/m K .
granite: 3.4 W/m K |
